[Mordred glanced up-- and realized she probably did owe Kerra an explanation. If they were to be making Chroma together, they needed to know shit.]
Mana. Magical energy, I guess. I'm no mage, so I don't get all of it.
[A shrug. She'd been around enough mages both during life and as a Servant to know that they were largely a strange lot. It was better to keep some distance.]
I can only tell because... I'm not as human as I look, okay? Part of my situation back home is that I was summoned to that era and I need to be tied to someone strong to stay there. If that person dies, I go away-- and that's just how it is.
[She tilted her head.]
...Yanno, it's weird when it's explained like that. But, my Master isn't here-- and I'm not having any problems, so there's gotta be something weird about this place that's making the plants go goofy.
[That. Explains a lot. Kerra's eyes narrow slightly as she focuses on Mordred again. She isn't human, obviously...so, her essence in the Force is different. Red, wild, but not Dark. It's apparent that she isn't a Force Sensitive individual...]
You're a manifestation of someone who's time passed?
[She has heard of this, too. Akkadia had tried to summon up the dead to kill her with Sith Alchemy. And then there were the stories of Revan and Exar Kun, as well as the vengeful spirits Nomi Sunrider had called forth on Yavin Four. These were intimately interwoven into the lore of the Jedi...but...]
Did not know that was possible without a hell of a lot of power...
[Mordred grinned, glad to see the dawning understanding in Kerra's eyes. The explanation was going far easier than she had expected.]
It's a wish granting treasure that pops up every few generations or so... I think. Anyway, it provides enough power for mages to summon seven of us in a low key ritual, and then we're supposed to fight it out for the winner. This time though, something happened... and there's gotta be like fifteen of us. It's crazy.
Some sort of cup brought back spirits. To fight for...what purpose?
[She pauses, holding up a hand.]
And just...for the record, I believe you. Even if I sound like I don't. I can sense that you're not wholly human. You have a unique feeling in the Force.
[Spoken as if it explained anything-- because, to Mordred, it's holiness was self-evident in it's power and it's mystery. Having been on quests seeking it out in her own era, she didn't deny that she longed for it for more than just her personal reasons.
Having a sense of completion, no matter what it was, would mean a lot to her and her misspent life.]
We're supposed to fight for the Grail itself, because it's supposed to grant any wish. But, it can only grant one-- and we're all selfish jerks who don't want to share.
[No matter how selfless the wish may seem.
Seeing Kerra's startled reaction, Mordred laughed. Kerra's sentiments were unbelievably real, and her words undeniably true.]
I wouldn't blame you if you didn't believe. Who in their right mind would do something like this?
But, I'm surprised you can tell that much. You don't act like a mage... or is this something you learned at that academy of your's?
[Kerra has little frame of reference for that specific word. Not because it's a foreign concept, but because it's meaningless to a warrior monk that sees the fabric of life itself whenever she blinks too hard. She purses her lips, squeezing Mordred's hand before she speaks and nods.]
I am a Jedi. Jedi...are people who can sense the Force. Which...I guess you could think of like mana, but that's not quite accurate.
The Force is an energy that surrounds us all, and comes from us. It binds us together in a luminous sea.
[She raises her free hand, drawing in a deep breath and creating a ball of light.]
It's not magic. Not like a magician or anything. It just...is...something that's a part of all of us. Every single organic thing in the universe is a part of the Force, and people like me are able to sense and manipulate it. And in you, I don't feel the same thing that I do in an ordinary human being. You're undeniably part human, but your essence is different.
You are right that I learned it at the academy, but you aren't trained to be able to sense the Force, you're born with the ability and the academy teaches you control.
[Mordred watches-- and listens. Years upon years in dealing with royal politics and the inexplicable machinations of magicians had taught her that observing was everything, and that listening was even more than that. Even if she didn't understand the concepts themselves, understanding the people was just as important.
Just like how she didn't understand why Sisigou would continually work in cemetaries and mausoleums, she understood that it was the basis of the powers that he knew how to use, and that such things were important to him.
Even if she couldn't see or feel the Force, that didn't mean it wasn't there.]
I'll take your word on it, but that sounds kinda like magecraft to me.
[A chuckle. Mordred squeezed Kerra's hand in return, sharing a gesture of solidarity with her.]
...So you know, I don't think anything's gonna happen to me. If we were back where I'm from, I'd be in trouble without my Master. Here feels like it's gonna be a completely different story.
Yeah. It might to some. But then, some technology might seem that way to you too. I'm gathering your world is a bit more...excuse the phrasing...primitive than the galaxy I come from.
[She doesn't mean that in a bad way, really. It's more a statement of fact, and she doesn't really believe Mordred will mind too much.]
And I'm glad. You're the first sensible person I've talked to here, who wasn't freaking out about something stupid. [Surprise, there.]
If you do find yourself needing...something, is there anything I can do? For a handsome knight like you, I can't say there's much I'd mind.
[Mordred is the knight, first and foremost. It's just how she presents herself, holds herself, that gives the kind of presentation that gender's less important than station. Plus, she's got muscles and if there's one thing Kerra finds hot in a woman...]
Hah. It's not near as 'primitive' as it was in my era.
[That was the time when metallurgy was still being refined, the era when literacy was reserved for the nobles and the monks, the era when the known world was still so small and the unknown was within reach. Mordred grinned though, not ashamed of these facts. Cars and cellphones were fantastic, but there was still a great deal that people couldn't do with science alone-- and the magic was incomplete to try.]
But it's got nothing on this place. This isn't my first time getting thrown into something weird, but most people haven't had to deal with a thousand years' worth of learning being shoved into their heads. Of course they're losing it over something stupid.
[Unlike Kerra, who knew all of the right words to say. Internally, Mordred preened at the compliment.]
I wouldn't mind being with a stunner like you if I need someone for more than a partner in crime. I appreciate how sensible you're being, and how understanding.
[Most people would have balked at her explanation, she knew. It wasn't something she herself would ever believe if she weren't living it, but the fact that her fellow knight in Kerra found everything she said so easy to comprehend was a reward all on it's own.
She was someone Mordred looked forward to spending more time with.]
This place is a few steps behind mine, honestly. But I understand why people think it is so advanced. Lots of nice, shiny things. It's a good place, and it'd fit right in with most worlds I've been to. [Though admittedly, perhaps not the bright and shining hub worlds of the Republic and the Jedi. Tython, Coruscant, Corellia, Alderaan...the truly outstanding ones.]
It's a nice place for a vacation, at least.
[Her lip tugs up in a small smirk at the compliment and she reflexively moves in front and reaches out to touch Mordred's collar. With a a raised eyebrow, and maybe a little exaggeration in the way she looks her fellow knight up and down (okay maybe a lot), she nods.]
I am nothing if not sensible and understanding, especially for someone with a . [True statement.] And that sounded a bit like an invitation for me to ask you out for drinks at some point.
Definitly. I'd go for sharing a few pints with you.
[Vacation or not, this was already far more time than Mordred expected to be given. Even if the Holy Grail was beyond her reach and she was never able to fight her father for the right to rule... time was enough. Her life had been so short-- shorter than people realized-- that the little things were what she appreciated the most.]
What do you say we slip out after we take a peek at whatever it is they're hiding?
Mo-San
Kerra chuckles, a dry, sardonic smile twisting her lip up a little.]
Mana? [Okay so she's familiar with what some cultures call the Force, and that is a name...]
How do you mean?

Mana. Magical energy, I guess. I'm no mage, so I don't get all of it.
