NAME: Kerra Holt
CANON: Star Wars (Legends)
CANON POINT: The end of Star Wars: Knight Errant, roughly 1000 years before the birth of Anakin Skywalker
AGE: 20
BACKGROUND: Wookieepedia entry.
PERSONALITY:
Kerra Holt is a young, impetuous Jedi Knight and the product of troubled times. She is extremely different than a Jedi from say, Yoda's time, and her motivations and actions much more closely aligned with the passionate side of the Sith philosophy than the calm, passive side of the Jedi Order. She does crave adventure and excitement and she’s hardly the model of a calm, stoic guardian of peace. Her world was conquered when she was 8 or 9 years old by a mad Sith Lord named Odion, though she was rescued by Vannar Treece, a respected Jedi Master who saw potential in the girl.
Treece, an odd man himself, saw Kerra as more than just a new Jedi trainee, but also as a weapon against the Sith. He raised her to be a paramilitary operative, bringing her up organizing raiding parties against the Sith with other Jedi. Kerra took those lessons to heart and at a young age she was learning to manage field logistics, supply lines, and how to act and survive behind enemy lines without being caught. This made her bold, aggressive, and all but fearless in the face of danger. Kerra flatly states that she hates hiding and prefers to have a straight up fight to “skulking in dark alleys.” Knight Errant is a nickname she’s given by a mercenary captain, and it’s not wrong. She behaves very much like a medieval knight out to prove herself worthy of full knighthood (despite having passed her trials and having been Knighted). Brash and headstrong, she doesn't like backing down.
This, along with her inherent mouthiness, often gets her into trouble. She’s a scoundrel in a lot of ways, as apt to reach for a blaster as a lightsaber, willing to flirt and tease and more to get her way, and just as likely to toss a grenade or rig a building to explode. She’s adaptable, streetwise, and practical, the product of her paramilitary upbringing. She doesn't have a lot of shame at all, modesty will get you killed, and not taking opportunities to enjoy oneself will drive you crazy, so she embraces this when given the chance.
Her time in Sith space hardened her immensely, and she last little trouble with killing or severely hurting people who give her cause. At one point near the end of canon she did shoot a helpless guard in the leg just because he mouthed off to her. She’s seen incredibly horrible things and been forced to work with truly horrible people against even worse people, such as using Lord Daimon against Lord Odion. This has made a marked impression on Kerra, forcing her to repress her more idealistic side and become a bit more jaded.
Though despite that, she still has that idealistic side, firmly believing that there is a right and a wrong in the universe. Jaded she may be but she does still try and act on the side that the Jedi taught her was right. She knows that to a lot of people in Sith space, she’s seen as a hero, and she’s absolutely willing to throw herself into danger to save any innocent person. She’s the kind of woman who never leaves a man behind, never abandons a child, and never, ever lets civilians get hurt if she can help it. Sure, a single misstep can get her killed, but she still wants to help everyone. “200,000 safe, billions to go,” she laments after freeing one planet from a particularly nasty Sith ruler, and she’s made it a personal mission to save every single civilian in Sith space that she can, saying that since “I’m the only Jedi in the Outer Rim, I’ve got an awful lot of responsibility.” And she does her level best to live up to that responsibility.
Kerra’s emotions do get the best of her frequently, and she often grows frustrated and angry. She has a fairly foul mouth and an absolutely reckless temper. She struggles to find inner peace, while at the same time harnessing her inner firecracker to push herself to fight better. She doesn’t really find peace in the Force like many Jedi do as she sees becoming a Jedi more a means to help people and take a personal stand against the maniacs that destroyed her homeworld, and a way to become a “living weapon” rather than as a philosophy of peace. Several Sith have said that she has enormous potential for the Dark Side, and some have almost swayed her, but her sheer stubbornness kept her off that path. She will not yield, bend, or bow to anyone who doesn’t share in her ideals, and several times throughout the novel Knight Errant she actually spits in the face of a much more powerful Sith Lord just to be spiteful.
Kerra, unlike a lot of other Jedi, also believes in luck. And she’s keenly aware of how incredibly lucky she is. Numerous times she escapes by the skin on the back of her neck, narrowly avoiding death or capture by some particularly vicious Sith agents. Sometimes it’s a timely icequake or a Sith Lord taking that extra second of grandiose posturing, but she never fails to thank her lucky stars after the fact.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Kerra is a fully trained Jedi Knight, the pupil of a famous master named Vannar Treece. As a Jedi she has the ability to sense and manipulate the Force, a metaphysical concept found anywhere there is life. The Force grants numerous abilities, far too many to list with any brevity, so I am going to link here the full list of Force Powers. Kerra is a Jedi of average potential with few rare or special talents, though unfortunately her entry page has not been updated in years. She can use any ability listed in this link under "Control" and "Sense" save for Flow-Walking and Morichro. Under the "Alter" heading, things get a little more complicated. She is familiar with all Light side abilities except Force Protection, Wall of Light, Crucitorn, Electric Judgement, and Force Ghost (though only the dead use that!).
Below I'll give a general overview of her most commonly used powers, as any of the more advanced techniques are things she's learned academically but has admitted that she is not as familiar with applied usage. Those abilities would require time in game spent training.
She shows great aptitude towards Telekinesis and Push and she knows how to use the Force to choke enemies. Kerra, through the Force, is faster, stronger, and far more durable than an average person. Superhuman senses including the benign ability to read emotions and minor battle precognition are also things Kerra is adept at. She can heal herself and others with the Force, purge out disease and toxins, and in general be a good bit beyond normal human capacity.
Kerra has absolutely zero aptitude for Force Persuasion, the “Mind Trick.” She can only uses it on extremely extremely weak willed individuals if at all, but she does have incredible mental defenses that shut out similar effects against her, as well as blocking telepathy and sensing emotions. She uses a lightsaber to great effect, and is skilled with many of the traditional forms of Lightsaber combat, though she seems to favor aggressive styles, or straight up brawling. She can also mask her presence in the Force, and even use it to fade from sight, one of her only “rare” talents. It’s not true invisibility, more making people just not notice her.
Outside of her abilities with the Force, she’s a skilled brawler, a crack shot, an expert tracker, and good with machines, bomb-making, and verbal manipulation through intimidation, flattery/flirtatious behavior, and through sheer force of will. She’s a skilled leader, commanding small covert ops teams throughout her canon, and she’s very good at going unnoticed where she can. In a lot of ways, she’s a scoundrel, a cheat, and very quick witted.
